Where it’s going

Ontario today. Then the rest of Canada, and further.

Langbyrde is for incorporated contractors and consultants in Canada, starting with Ontario. Here is what works today, what does not yet, and what we plan to build, in order. There are no dates on purpose: each step ships when it is ready.

What is built today, and what is not

Built today: Ontario, end to end

Everything on this site works for a corporation based in Ontario.

  • HST collected and paid, input tax credits and the 50% rule for meals and entertainment
  • CRA and Ontario due dates as reminders, shown as estimates: the HST return, payroll remittances, the T2 and the Ontario annual return
  • A chart of accounts coded to GIFI, the CRA’s standard account codes, carried into the CPA package
  • Invoices to clients in other provinces, and zero-rated invoices to clients abroad, in CAD or USD
  • Every province’s and territory’s sales-tax rates except Quebec’s are already in the Canadian rules

Not in the app yet

  • Companies based in a province other than Ontario (every province’s sales-tax rates except Quebec’s are in; each province’s filing dates and the corporate tax estimate are not)
  • Invoicing a client in Quebec
  • Reading the vendor and amounts off a receipt automatically (you enter them; Langbyrde files the receipt)
  • Suggesting which receipt belongs to which statement line (you attach receipts yourself)
  • Opening your books on a new computer from the recovery kit
  • Quebec, the United States and the European Union
  • French
  • Your books on more than one computer at once, or more than one person in the same books
  • Payroll calculation (you record the payroll your provider runs)
  • Bank feeds (you import the statements you download)
  • A phone app

Planned, in this order, subject to change

Each step builds on the one before it. The order can change if what people need changes.

  1. Next, in version 1

The rest of Canada, a package any CPA can open, and French

Free updates for everyone who owns version 1.

    • Province by province: each province’s filing dates and its own sales-tax rules, with an accountant from that province asked to review them
    • A CPA package your accountant can open in a browser, with no Langbyrde to install
    • Langbyrde in French: the app, invoices, the guide and this website
    • Receipts from your phone, saved straight into your company folder through your own cloud drive’s app
  2. Version 2

Your books on two computers, more than one person, and Quebec

A new major version: a paid upgrade for version 1 owners. Version 1 keeps working if you do not take it.

    • Your books on two computers, kept in step through a folder you already own, such as OneDrive or iCloud Drive, with no Langbyrde server in between
    • More than one person in the same books, each with their own role: you, a bookkeeper, and your CPA
    • Quebec: QST with its own registration and Revenu Québec filings, Quebec payroll concepts such as the RL-1, in French
  3. Version 3

    The United States

For corporations based in the US, as its own edition with its own licence. A Canadian company invoicing US clients does not need it: that works today.

    • State by state, added as free updates within that version
    • State sales tax where your services are taxed, and tracking of 1099-NEC forms for the contractors you pay
    • US payroll and filing dates as reminders, the way Ontario’s work today
  4. Version 4

    The European Union

For companies based in the EU, as its own edition with its own licence, country by country.

    • VAT, including the reverse charge on services to other EU businesses
    • E-invoices in the European standard formats
    • Each country added with its own rules and, where needed, its language
  5. Later

Ideas we intend to build, once the above is solid

Each one only if it can be done without a Langbyrde server holding your data.

    • Payroll calculation, not just tracking, with every table reviewed by a payroll-literate accountant
    • Time tracking and per-diems on your projects
    • Mileage from a GPS log
    • A small phone app for capturing receipts with an amount and a category
    • Bank feeds, only through a provider you choose and connect yourself
    • Sending e-invoices through national platforms, where a country requires it

What it means for your licence

  • Updates within a major version are free. The rest of Canada and French arrive that way for everyone who owns version 1.
  • A new major version is a paid upgrade. Quebec, your books kept in step on two computers, and more than one person arrive with version 2. You do not have to take it: the version you own keeps working, and your licence does not expire.
  • The US and the EU are their own editions, each with its own licence, because each is a different set of rules. A Canadian licence covers Canada.
  • Your data stays in your files. A later version is built to open the same company file, and nothing is uploaded to us.
  • Still no advice. Wherever it works, Langbyrde keeps the books and prepares packages. It does not file and does not give tax advice.

Help decide what comes first

Tell us the province, state or country your company is based in, and what you would need there. It is the most useful thing we can hear while we choose the order inside each step.

Your books, in your files.
